At Girl Power Afrique (GPA), we believe that advancing women’s health begins with evidence.

In line with our mission to improve access to sexual and reproductive health services for women and girls across Africa and promote gender equality, we are expanding our work in research and innovation. Our newest research engagements are aimed at designing effective, community-based solutions that reflect the real needs and experiences of African women and girls.
Understanding the Health Realities of Adolescent Girls in Nigeria
Our founder, Ogechi Vinaprisca Ikhuoria, is currently leading a dissertation project titled
"Sexual Activity and Associated Health Problems Among Female Senior Secondary School Students in Port Harcourt, Nigeria."
This study explores the patterns and drivers of early sexual debut among adolescent girls and examines how related health challenges—such as STIs and unintended pregnancies—impact their education, emotional well-being, and life outcomes.
Initial findings point to a growing need for age-appropriate sexual health education and youth-friendly health services within school systems. Through this research, GPA continues to advocate for informed policies and interventions that empower adolescent girls with the knowledge, tools, and support they need.
Collaborating on Contraceptive Research with Youths in Research
In partnership with Youths in Research, GPA is contributing to a national mixed-methods study on contraceptive use and decision-making among Nigerian women of reproductive age.
This research considers not only the availability of contraceptives but also the deeper social, cultural, and relational factors that affect women’s choices—including the role of male partners and community attitudes.
We believe that reproductive health education must be inclusive, rights-based, and rooted in lived experiences. This study helps us advocate for family planning solutions that support bodily autonomy, dignity, and access for all women.
Partnering with Medvax Health on Women's Health Research to Advance Tech-Driven Healthcare
GPA is proud to be part of an ongoing collaborative initiative with Medvax Health to explore how technology can improve reproductive healthcare for African women.
This initiative is investigating the role of digital health tools—like mobile apps and telemedicine—in closing access gaps, especially for women in remote or underserved areas.
Our goal is to co-create digital health models that are not only scalable and inclusive but also tailored to the unique realities of African communities.
Research as a Pillar of Our Advocacy and Impact
Our growing involvement in research is central to our vision of a healthier, more equitable future for women and girls.
As we deepen our impact through research, we remain guided by the values that built our community: collaboration, inclusion, respect, and love. We continue to place the voices of women and girls at the center of everything we do.
